A Clinical and Mycological Study of Cutaneous Candidiasis

Abstract
This study was made to investigate the present status of cutaneous candidiasis clinically and mycologically.
We surveyed out-patients of Dermatclogy clinic of Sung-Sim Hospital, College of Medicine, Chung-Ang University, during 5 years from 1975 to 1979.
The results were as followed;
1. The incidence of cutaneous candidiasis was 1.2%O of total 23, 537 out-patients and showed a tendency to be annually increased in number.
2. The ratio of male to female was 1. 5 : 1 clinically and 1. 9 : 1 mycologically.
3. The highest incidence clinically was under the 10 years old group, mycologically in the 3rd-4th decade group.
4. The monthly prevalence of cutaneous candidiasis was high in July, August and September.
5. The positive rate of KOH examination was 65.8% of cutaneous candidiasis and 61.9% of other dermatophytoses.
6. Fungi were cultured from 56.6% of 152 scrapings of cutaneous candidiasis and 36.8% of other dermatophytoses. Each rate includes 65% of positive KOH, 40.4% of negative KOH in cutaneous candidiasis, and 45. 8% of positive KOH, 22.2% of negative KOH in other dermatophytoses.
7. 84 strains of C. albicans were isolated in cutaneous candidiasis and 280 strains in other dermatophytoses, totally 364 strains.
8. C. albicans were most commonly cultured in the intertriginous areas of the groin, hands and feet.
